Memorial Foundation.

At a brief ceremony Wednesday, July 7, 2011, Sarah Folmar, CEO of the YMCA,

said the money is earmarked for use in creating the childcare center at the new

building.

Linda Stegall, Executive Director of the Foundation, said the Foundation’s 85-year

Mission has been to “do things for the benefit of children….this helps kids

and helps carry on what we’ve been doing.”

Folmar said the foundation has been a long-time supporter of the YMCA, providing

The current playground and supporting numerous other endeavors that benefit

“at-risk and needy children.”

Hughes Home Donates $164,000

Linda Stegall (right), Hughes Memorial Home Foundation Executive Director, presents Becky Wales, executive director of God's Storehouse, a check worth $164,000. Also shown is Tommy Foster, president of Hughes Memorial Home. The donation will go towards the God's Storehouse Building Fund and actually helped purchase the old Chrysler Building on Memorial Drive. "This gift helped us reach our goal to purchase the building and gave us some left over for renovations," Wales said. God's Storehouse still needs between $3,000- $4,000 to complete the project. Hughes Memorial Home was originally an orphanage from 1922-1970s established in memory of John Hughes, 1869-1922.

After the orphanage closed, the home became a residential treatment facility and was open until 1999. Since 2000, the Hughes Memorial Home foundation has awarded $2.8 million in grants and scholarships to benefit children.

Hope Tree Family Services

In November of 2007, Hughes Memorial Foundation awarded a grant to Hope Tree Family Services to help fund an education/activity center at their Glory Road facility for girls' located in Henry County, Virginia. Glory Road is a Residential Treatment Center for emotionally and/or physically abused or neglected girls. Camp Glory Road is one of only three such programs located in Virginia and helps to teach the importance of personal responsibility and strengthen residents' abilities to function in society. They also provide an academic facility that is fully licensed and accredited by the Virginia Association of Specialized Educational Facilities.

Glory Road has been very successful in guiding youth onto the path of better lives, and through the grant and new facility, will be able to expand and serve even more. The Hughes Memorial Education/Activity Center will be open soon.
