YMCA gets $250K for New Building
The Danville Family YMCA is one big step closer to its new complex at the former Dan River Inc. Long Mill property, thanks to a $250,000 donation from the Hughes Memorial Foundation.
At a brief ceremony Wednesday, July 7, 2011, Sarah Folmar, CEO of the YMCA, aid the money is earmarked for use in creating the childcare center at the new building.
Linda Stegall, Executive Director of the Foundation, said the Foundation’s 85-year mission has been to “do things for the benefit of children….this helps kids and helps carry on what we’ve been doing.”
Folmar said the foundation has been a long-time supporter of the YMCA, providing The current playground and supporting numerous other endeavors that benefit “at-risk and needy children.”

HUGHES MEMORIAL HOME FOUNDATION AWARDS SPRING 2011 SCHOLARSHIPS
Hughes Memorial Home Foundation recently awarded $102,000 in scholarships to area college students and upcoming graduates. Among the graduates from the Danville/Pittsylvania County area receiving scholarships were Michelle Johns, Sarah Brinkley, James Wade, Hannah Gibson, Lynsey Palmer, Benjamin Tucker, Elizabeth Tucker, Candace Blair, Ashlee Clark, Melanie Fowler, Michelle Fowler, Amanda Johns, Lauren Shields, Dana Collie, Kayce Elliott, Zachary Gibson, Megan Adams, Chris Alderson, Victoria Cox, Brandon Floyd, Isaac Gibson, Christine Gore, Paul Porter, Nathan Unger and Jeffrey Walker.
Students receiving scholarships from Martinsville and surrounding area were Brittany Bowers, Dina Couter, Mackenzie Coulson, Linnie Daniel, Chelsea Dollarhite, Connor Jones, Kayla Jones, Nathan Knopp, Nile Knopp, Elizabeth Marshall, Johnathan Morton, Stephanie Stanley, and Cody Wright.
The Foundation also awarded $41,489.00 in Grants to the following organizations: Community Blessing Center $10,000, Danville Science Center $10,000, Goodwill Industries of Danville $6,489, Salvation Army $15,000. The Danville YMCA received a $250,000 grant toward the child care center in the new facility which will be named the Hughes Memorial Foundation Child Care Center.

FALL AWARDS ANNOUNCED
HUGHES MEMORIAL FOUNDATION announced fall awards in November for scholarships and grants. Scholarships awarded totaled $42,000 and grants were awarded for $59,900. In addition, Hughes awarded a special project grant of $200,000 to assist with the construction of two playgrounds for special need and handicapped youths in Lynchburg, Virginia which will be open to the public.
SPRING SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED
Hughes Memorial Home Foundation recently awarded $103,000 in scholarships to area college students and upcoming graduates. Among the local graduates receiving scholarships were Annika Butler and Michelle Johns from Halifax High, Sarah Brinkley from G.W. High School, James Wade from Galileo School, Kristy Edwards, Hannah Gibson and Lynsey Palmer from Dan River High, and Benjamin Tucker and Elizabeth Tucker from Gretna High. Area college students receiving scholarships were Candace Blair, Rachel Brinkley, Joshua Cannady, Matthew Cannady, Ashlee Clark, Cary Lee Cumbo, Melanie Fowler, Michelle Fowler, Amanda Johns, Joseph Kelly, Chelsea Landrum, Keidra Richardson, Daniel Ricketts, Lauren Shields, C. God's Storehouse reaches campaign goal
Santa Claus came a wee bit early for God's Storehouse.
Becky Wales, executive director of the local food bank, announced Monday that a donation of $164,000 from the Hughes Memorial Foundation has put the group over the top of its capital campaign.
"The Hughes Memorial Foundation does things for the benefit of children, and once we heard how many children are being fed by God's Storehouse, we wanted to be of assistance to them so they could help even more," said Linda Stegall, executive director of the foundation.

God's Storehouse will be able to buy new building
Becky Wales, executive director of God's Storehouse, announced this morning that the organization has raised enough money to purchase the former Danville Chrysler building and expand their space.
A donation of $164,000 from the Hughes Memorial Foundation put them over the top of their capital campaign to raise $665,000 by Jan. 8.
"We are so grateful the community has supported us to purchase the building," Wales said. "We are grateful for every gift, from the $2 that clients who wanted to participate in the fundraising venture gave us to the individuals who gave larger gifts. They are all important and helped us reach our goal."
